Happy New Year!

Whew! Another year has flown by and we’ve entered my favourite set of days— the liminal space between Christmas and the New Year! (Or, January 8th as it currently stands, which in my opinion is the new January 1st!) Most people are taking time off, there’s an endless supply of leftover ham, roast sweet potatoes and too many half empty bottles of wine. But past all that, the hope of a fresh start glimmers in the distance.
TW: Pet Loss
In 2025, we experienced heavy grief with the loss of our cat. Life felt like it halted for a while and it was hard to continue with daily routines. I’ll never forget dragging our mattress into the living room and holing up for a week in our little cave of misery.
Once we could muster leaving the house, we forced ourselves to partake in hobbies and fitness because it was an easier distraction that actually left us feeling fulfilled and hopeful. From there, I knew I wanted to continue these habits. Less screen time, more fitness, more crafts, etc. I ended the year feeling pretty well-balanced, and I want to take these vibes into the new year as well.
End of TW
I’ve enjoyed New Year’s resolutions for as long as I can remember. While a lot of people turn up their nose at the idea of setting unrealistic promises to form new habits, I’m a big believer in Any Progress is Good Progress.
For example, some things I didn’t achieve this year were to draw more personal art, grow my finances, and to read 20 books.
(I drew nothing outside of work, spent too much money in Japan, and read… not 20!)
But! I also went full time in freelancing, went to Japan, finished Couch to 5k, spent more time with friends, and upped my fitness. Yay!
I’m feeling 2026 is going to be a big year. I haven’t figured out my final goals list yet (I like to save that for a sunny day at the beach) but I’ve been marinating on two major ideas:
1: Grow my finances!
The second half of 2025 was finally bringing me consistent commission income and I’m excited to see the difference a full year will bring! I want to end the year feeling stable and not stressed about buying Christmas presents, and feel like I’m making good progress on my savings goals.
2: Hit the gym because I want an ass!
I might let my step count take a backseat this year as I focus more on my own backseat. I also want to switch things up with more varied activities like hiking, swimming, running, and the occasional sport mixed in. The idea of finally going to the gym is pretty intimidating, but I’ll go with friends the first few times as I learn the machines and what routines I enjoy!
I guess I’ll update you in 2027 on how I went ;)
As a treat, if you want to commission me this month type HAPPY 2026 into the “anything else you want to add?” section of your service request and I’ll add a 10% discount! Expires 31st of January ❤

For now, I hope you have been able to find a moment of relaxation and reflection. I wish you all the luck with your 2026 goals and endeavors, whatever they may be!
See ya.
